Default Death Penalty with a 55 Monk

I have a farming 55 monk, but have noticed something wierd when I die.

I get the 15% death penalty, but my health reduces to 1hp, instead of to 47hp. Is this a new addition to make it more difficult to farm or something? I believe they must have also added a minimum damage per attack because even if I have protective spirit on at 1hp I die from 1 hit. (theoretically with 1hp i should take no damage with prot spirit as the damage taken should round down to zero).

Any insights??

Change your armor one piece. DP is before runes.

I hope your skills are copy/pasted out of the forums. But if they are, stay in PvE.

I think you mean aren't? I did not realise DP was before runes, thanks for that.
I have been doing this on and off for months, trying to save for fissure armor. It is an individual build, that I have developed over time and changed significantly with some of the elites I have got along the way. If it resembles other builds then oh well, but it works how I want it to work and has forced me to think about the builds I use more, not just to solo farm.

Thanks for your help

Like jmk said, just put another smite staff on weapon switch and use a different icon.

When my monk dies I switch out to setup #2 and it gives me 33 life, I go out all the time with that and your dp quickly goes away and you are back up where you started at 105 before the -55 health item. Just switch back and you are good to go.

I kill minotaurs and griffons all the time with only 33 health, it is a challenge with the interrupt from the devourers but can be done just be sure to keep prot spirit up when you are runing near any of them, those traps they set are nasty without it

lol, i've used a 55 hp monk for about 2 weeks, mainly taking on two areas in the desert, and i never even thought about taking my -50 icon off and swapping it when i die, i always mapped back to augory rock.

Here's a useful couple of tricks.

If you have a sup rune (other than vigor) sometimes it's nice to have a duplicate piece of armor with a minor rune of the same type. You can swap the piece out if you need to.

Also there are some offhand collector monk items that have only +10 energy but give +5 armor and another +45 health while enchanted. So if you swap out your -50 item you'll have a net gain of +95 health provided you're using enchants (which I'm sure you are).

uhm Prot Spirit reduces dmg to 10%..Guild Wars doesn't handle decimals so it truncates everything after the decimal. Meaning you'd be down to 0 health. No it's not new...it's been like that forever.

this 55 monk crap really bothers me...there's thousands of people running this build with absolutely no idea of how or why it works.

Yeah. Judging by the number of 55 monks that have questions about it I'd say you're right.

Someone proficient with the build can be effective - Conversely, a copycat builder who doesn't know the ropes by experience is an ineffective and fragile character in every way.

Ahh its truncated, not rounded, thank you because I was under the impression it rounded. Are durations of spells also truncated, or are they rounded?

And if you are saying I don't know how it works, then bugger off. If you read my previous post you would see I have developed and chopped and changed my build as I have gone (over months). I hardly see how not realising that the game mechanics truncate and not round makes me a cookie cutter.

Switching gear is important for that build, and not only armor pieces

Anyway, you were lucky; there once was a bug that made your health become negative after 2 deaths in a row... It happened to me just when I was about to capture Shield of Judgement OMG... That boss was lying there death and I was being ressurected time after time and died again instantly. Had to do it all over...
